Postcard from KTH of Borobudur, Buddhist temple

SCOPE / CONTENT

Postcard with KTH's handwriting, "Borobudur" and "0-11" on the front of the postcard, B&W. "Borabodoer, built in the 8th century, had a strong pull for me. This Buddhist monument has a direct symbolism. 4 lower terraces are sculptured with friezes depicting mankind's early activities and are heavily ornamented. The upper ones show the Buddha teaching the way to release. Then there are 3 upper galleries, devoid of ornament, crowned with stupas enclosing Buddhas, symbolising the lack of outward props in the higher stages of the path. And finally at the summit a large pain stupa representing the void which is nameless and formless. I felt a good atmosphere up here, and was quite happy resting on on the lotus away from the 'maddening throngs.'"
